Tenchi Muyo! (天地無用!, Tenchi Muyō!?), is an anime, light novel, and manga series about a boy named Tenchi Masaki and the alien women who loved him.

The original series, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, is a six episode OVA (Original Video Animation or Direct-to-Home Video) series; released in Japan in 1992–93. As its popularity grew, it spurred a seventh episode (also known as the Tenchi Special) and the stand alone Mihoshi Special. In 1994-95, the second OVA series was created and released, featuring episodes 8–13. From 2003 to 2005, a third OVA series was released, with episodes 14–19, centering around the three goddesses introduced in the second OVA series. This is then followed by a special twentieth episode which centered around some of the remaining plot threads towards Tenchi's mother, as well as Noike, who was introduced in episode 15. The series can be somewhat confusing too, due to it having several continuities.

The Tenchi Muyo franchise has a manga series developed after an animated version was released, when typically the reverse is true.

Tenchi Muyo! was one of the early successes for AIC, the animation company behind it, which went on to create El-Hazard, Battle Athletes, Oh My Goddess!, Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure and many other anime series. The main artist for the series is Masaki Kajishima.

The name of the manga is a play on words. Tenchi muyō (天地無用, Tenchi muyō?) in Japanese means "This way up", a phrase written, for example, on boxes to show they should not be upturned. 無用 muyō also means "unnecessary", thus with a lead character "Tenchi" this name could also mean "unnecessary Tenchi", more often translated to "No need for Tenchi" (even so far as the episode titles for the first TV series to have the running gag of having the titles start with "No need for...") The name 'Tenchi' also means 'Heaven (or the sky) and Earth' so one could also take the title to mean "No Need for Heaven and Earth."

[edit] Summary

The three major series continuities are Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, Tenchi TV/Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo. The first series, TM!R, is the original OVA (Original Video Animation) which introduces the core characters. Tenchi TV/Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are spin-offs that utilize the same characters, with the addition of Kiyone Makibi, though the back story is quite different from the original OVAs. The first of the spin-offs was Tenchi Muyo! TV (also known as Tenchi Universe), in 1995; it is a twenty-six episode TV series that retells the original series differently. This anime was one of a few anime to be broadcast on PBS member station KTEH in San Jose, California.[citation needed]

[edit] Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, Kajishima canon

Main article: Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

The canon accepted by series creator Kajishima is as follows:

Animation

Various dōjinshi from Kajishima

Various interviews with Kajishima

The book 101 Questions and Answers of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Oh-Ki (also titled 101 Secrets)

[edit] Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, Hasegawa canon

Naoko Hasegawa, writer of episodes 3 and 5 the first OVA series, uses a different continuity, which includes the following:

Animation

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 1 (episodes 1-6)

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki Galaxy Police Mihoshi's Space Adventure (also known as the Mihoshi Special), though except for the framing sequence, much of the story is as an exaggeration by Mihoshi and is not considered canon.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki Manatsu no Eve (Tenchi Muyo! Daughter of Darkness) (movie 2)

Other Materials

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki Manatsu no Carnival (radio drama)

A series of 13 novels by Hasegawa, including the Manatsu no Eve book upon which the movie was based upon.

A few characters from OVA 2 (episodes 8-13.5), such as Tokimi, Emperor Azusa, and Empress Misaki, make appearances in Hasegawa's novels. However, the episodes and events from OVA 2, as well as episode 7, do not take place in Hasegawa's canon.

Hasegawa also worked on the TV series, which includes her characters Kiyone and (in the movies) Achika, but the TV series is not considered to be in the same continuity.

[edit] Tenchi Universe, a.k.a. the Negishi canon

Main article: Tenchi Universe

Called the "Negishi canon", after Hiroshi Negishi, the director who was the main creative force behind the series and connecting movies, Tenchi Universe (known as Tenchi Muyo! TV in Japan) has no sentient Jurai trees, Ayeka is not closely related to Katsuhito, and Washu is the person sealed in the cave. Kiyone has a major role in this series. Also, this series has a stronger emphasis on Ryoko, as shown in the show's opening credits and in some episodes, as well as Tenchi Forever.

Animation

Tenchi Muyo! TV (Tenchi Universe), 26 episodes

Tenchi Muyo! in Love (movie 1)

Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2: Haruka Naru Omoi (Tenchi Forever!) (movie 3)

Other Material

A manga, also written by Negishi, was produced as a tie in to TMiL2, though it is uncertain if this manga is part of established Negishi canon:

Tenchi Muyo! In Love 2: Eternal Memory (manga)

[edit] Tenchi in Tokyo

Main article: Tenchi in Tokyo

Shin Tenchi Muyo! (known as Tenchi in Tokyo in English), in 1997, is a third version of the story, centered on Tenchi's high school adventures in Tokyo. It is also a twenty-six episode TV series and many of the returning main characters have been portrayed differently with some slight personality changes.

Animation

Shin Tenchi Muyo! (26 episodes)

[edit] Movies

There are also three movies: Tenchi Muyo! in Love, Tenchi Muyo! Manatsu no Eve (The Daughter of Darkness) (1997), and Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2: Haruka Naru Omoi (Tenchi Forever!), 1999.

Movies 1 and 3 are intended to be in, and match with, the Tenchi Universe continuity. Movie 3 concludes the Tenchi Muyo! TV (Universe) series.

The continuity of movie 2 is more complicated. It is written by Naoko Hasegawa, who co-wrote the first OVA series and wrote several Tenchi novels in Japanese; the movie is based on one of her novels.

Movie 2 is sometimes believed to be in Tenchi Universe continuity because of the presence of Kiyone and because Ayeka refers to my brother's tree instead of your tree while speaking to Katsuhito. Neither of these are related to Tenchi Universe; Kiyone is present because she originated from Hasegawa's OVA-based novels, and the Ayeka line is a misleading translation. In reality, the movie is an animated version of the Hasegawa novel of the same name, and is part of her continuity. In Japanese, a name or title may be used in some circumstances where English would require a pronoun; saying "brother's tree" to Katsuhito does not mean that her brother is someone other than him. Furthermore, in the Universe series it is never demonstrated that she has a brother.

Tenchi Muyo! in Love (1996)

Tenchi Muyo! in Love was the first of the Tenchi films, taking place within the Universe timeline.

The movie is about how the gang must save Tenchi from utter disappearance by capturing a criminal named Kain, which had traveled back in time to destroy Tenchi's mother, Achika so that Tenchi isn't born to threaten his conquest of Jurai. In order to save Achika and Tenchi, Tenchi and crew travel back in time to the year of 1970 to protect Achika.

Tenchi Muyo! Daughter of Darkness (1997)

Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness (Manatsu no Eve) is the second Tenchi movie.

The movie is about a girl named Mayuka who appears out of nowhere claiming to be Tenchi's daughter. Ryoko and Ayeka are jealous and/or suspicious, Sasami befriends her, Kiyone and Mihoshi are the same, and Washu suspects something. Mayuka turns out to have been created by the demonic villain Yuzuha, who wanted revenge on Yosho because after befriending Yosho as a child she was banished by Jurai.

Tenchi Forever! (1999)

Tenchi Forever! (Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2) is a continuation of the first TV series (Tenchi Universe) and sequel to the original film.

After a fight between Ryoko and Ayeka, Tenchi runs into the mountains to be seduced by a beautiful woman and disappears. Six months later, he is found with a woman named Haruna and he has forgotten his previous life.

[edit] Manga

The Tenchi manga consists of two series, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-oh-ki and Shin Tenchi Muyo! (the shin here means new and has no connection to the second television series, Shin Tenchi Muyo) are written by Hitoshi Okuda. They have been released in America as No Need for Tenchi and The All-New Tenchi Muyo!.

Unlike most anime/manga combinations, for Tenchi the anime came first, and the manga is considered non-canon. It is based on OVA series 1 and 2. Since the manga originally began in Japan before the release of OVA 2, the OVA 2 elements are not introduced immediately at the beginning. Because the manga is non-canon, new elements introduced in the manga do not carry over to the anime.

Manga series released in the US:

"No Need for Tenchi" series! (Volumes 1-2, earlier half of volume 3, 4-6, first half of 7, and 8-12.)

"No Need for Tenchi: Magical Girl Pretty Sammy" (Later half of Volume 3, based on the "Pretty Sammy" OVAs. Not thought of as part of the manga storyline)

"No Need for Tenchi: Tenchi in Love" (Second half of Volume 7, based on the first Tenchi movie. Has characters from the Tenchi Universe timeline. Not thought of as part of the manga storyline)

"Tenchi Muyō: Sasami Stories" (A collection or reprint of several of the Sasami related events that happened in the No Need for Tenchi! manga series. However, the book itself is in the new smaller format, and also features bonus comics in the back that were printed over the years. The bonus comics are not thought of as part of the overall manga story.)

"The All-New Tenchi Muyō!" (Volumes 1-10; It continues the No Need for Tenchi! manga, but with a smaller page format. Introduces several new characters that weren't in the original manga.)

[edit] Spin-offs

The first Tenchi spinoff is the Pretty Sammy, the Magical Girl series, a magical girl series where Sasami is the lead character. The first use of Pretty Sammy was in the Tenchi Muyo! Sound File, a Japanese-only music video release. The same animation was used in the ending of the Mihoshi Special. In 1995, a three episode Pretty Sammy OVA series began, where Sasami, who is known as Sasami Kawai, magically becomes Pretty Sammy. The second Pretty Sammy is a TV series (titled in America as Magical Project S), which came out in 1996. This series is a separate continuity from the OVA series. Pretty Sammy also appears in the Mihoshi Special and in an alternate reality sequence in the Tenchi Universe series.

The second is Tenchi Muyo! GXP, which was released in Japan in 2001. The series takes place during the Kajishima version of the OVA continuity, and is set a year after the events of the third OVA series despite being released first chronologically. The main character of this twenty-six episode TV series is Seina Yamada, a friend of Tenchi Masaki who accidentally joined the Galaxy Police. Many characters from Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki make appearances in this series, including the use of Seiryo as a major character and a full-fledged Tenchi Muyo! crossover in episode 17.

Sasami: Mahou Shoujo Club, currently shown in Japan as 2006, is recognized as the third spin-off with Sasami, known here as Sasami Iwakura, as the main character. The animation style here is saccharine compared to the other titles, but the hold over characters from the franchise (particularly Misao of Pretty Sammy) are still fairly recognizable.

Other versions of Tenchi Muyo! are also available as graphic novels, video games and radio dramas.

The series Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure is also thought to be related to the Tenchi Muyo universe, due to the blatant use of the "Lighthawk Wings" associated with the Jurai dynasty in Tenchi Muyo. Mecha Jinv from Dual! appear in Tenchi Muyo! GXP, Kiyone, Ramia, and Misao appear in a brief easter egg cameo in the series' OVA special, and there is much speculation concerning the ancient civilization that the character "D" is from. Kajishima has hinted that Dual! does, in fact, relate to Tenchi Muyo!. The creator of both DUAL! and Tenchi Muyo!, Masaki Kajishima, confirmed that DUAL! is in fact an alternate version of the Tenchi Muyo! universe.

[edit] English adaptations distributor history

The manga is published in English in North America by Viz Communications. In Singapore it is published in English by Chuang Yi as No Need for Tenchi!

Pioneer USA (now Geneon Entertainment) has brought out most of the releases in the USA up to 2002. They released the Tenchi OVA series, the Mihoshi Special episode, both of the Tenchi Muyo! television series, and all three of the Tenchi Muyo! movies. Pioneer USA has also distributed the Pretty Sammy spinoff, with both the Pretty Sammy OVAs and Magical Project S TV series. On DVD the Mihoshi Special is released with Pretty Sammy, not with the rest of the Tenchi series.

OVA1 and OVA2 were released on DVD in the UK in 2004. A single boxset was released in the UK which includes OVA1, OVA2 and the Mihoshi Special.

When first aired in 2000 on Cartoon Network's Toonami in America, Cartoon Network did some editing to the character's lines. The girls (mostly Ryoko) often drink 'tea' throughout the series. However, their 'tea' is often poured and distributed like sake, a Japanese rice wine. Characters often begin to blush, slur their words together, hiccup, and slowly decline in their mannerisms as they chugged down their 'tea.' This was done to prevent backlash from the more conservative American audiences. The delivery of lines from the characters, however, implies that the characters are aware of the double entendre (ex.: "You can't drink THAT kind of 'tea' at school!")

In addition to substituting 'tea' for sake, Cartoon Network also digitally painted swimsuits on several female character to cover up nudity during bathhouse scenes, and carried out extensive edits for language and other adult content, including references to sex, masturbation, and 'peeping'.

FUNimation Productions licensed the second Tenchi Muyo! spinoff series Tenchi Muyo! GXP for distribution in the United States in 2003, and released it in 2004. FUNimation also licensed the third OVA series and released it on DVD starting July 2005. FUNimation has kept most of the original dub voice cast except for Petrea Burchard, who dubbed Ryoko's voice in the Pioneer/Geneon releases. She is replaced by Mona Marshall in the GXP and OVA 3 series.

[edit] Locations

Alpha – A planet from the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, ruins on the planet were attacked by Kagato but otherwise nothing else has been seen or said of it.

Balta- an autonomous planet within the Juraian territories, named after and ruled by the Balta family, which were also the rulers of the old Balta pirate guild.

Beta – a planet from the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series. The only mention in the series is that several people disappeared in the planet's mystery spot once.

Chobimaru – in the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series and GXP, it is a planet-sized spaceship belonging to the Kuramitsu family and operated by the Galaxy Police. Inside it has oceans, plants, and animal life along with the artificial structures. The ship also has firepower capable of destroying an entire planet.

Earth - Also known as "Terra", home of the human race-and Tenchi Masaki's house is located here.

Galaxy Police Headquarters - A giant space station shaped like an arc. It houses many Galaxy Police officers and acts much like a massive police station.

Galaxy Academy - Three massive ring worlds together that are the size of a solar system. Many cultures and races co-inhabit this place, which houses both scientific and military schools as well as many civilian merchant areas.

Jurai — The seat of the powerful Juraian Empire, the homeworld of First Princess Ayeka, and the abode of intelligent trees descended from a goddess in the anime Tenchi Muyo!.

Raynza Republic - A unknown number of worlds that borders with the Juraien empire's territory, but not with the rest of the Galactic Union. Are now allies with Jurai thanks to a political marriage.

Ryuten - One of Jurai's "sister planets" within the No Need For Tenchi! Manga. Aside from being a luxurious planetary resort, Ryuten is the sole proprietor of the giant trees used by Jurai's royal family. Craftspeople of the planet shape and carve the wood for use as prodigious spacecraft, with the master sculptor given the highest seat of authority.

Seniwa - Home planet of the Kuramitsu family and one-time rival of Jurai. The two planets once were involved in a bitter Cold War, but have since became close allies.

Tolane - A planet administered by the Galactic Science Academy, where Kagato had kidnapped Washu and taken Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki as slaves.

Tokimi's Temple- Actually the home realm of the Chousin, this place is a massive area of altered space and time where all three - Tokimi, Washu and Tsunami - resided at one time. The area is made of many worlds with chaotic geometries.

Trivia sections are discouraged under Wikipedia guidelines.

The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones.

The creator of Tenchi Muyo!, Masaki Kajishima, named several of the characters after locations in his Okayama Prefecture hometown. [1]

Guardians of Order published an English-language role-playing game based on OVA Episodes 1-13. The game, now out of print due to the expiring of the license, was moderately successful but is mainly of interest for combining many of the design elements that would be incorporated a few months later into the second edition of Big Eyes, Small Mouth and for the insights its writers gave on Tenchi's dilemma.

The Japanese title logo of Tenchi Muyo! makes a cameo appearance as graffiti in issue 1 of the Mark Waid / Alex Ross graphic novel series Kingdom Come, right after Norman McCay leaves Wesley Dodds's funeral and starts walking through the streets.

Lots of harem anime out there. Some older ones are Urusei Yatsura and Love Hina. Ah! My Goddess is also similar in some ways. An ecchi series I like a lot is Amaenadeyo. Just last season there was Nagasarete Airantou, School Days kinda became harem-like near the end -- beware though, this series has a VERY dark ending to it.

Hmm...that's all I can think of at the moment, but there are a lot of 'em out there. Still, these shows are enjoyable.

What's your reaction for this pictures?
Philippines is developing day by day, that's good but people don't see other things that too have strong roots like poverty, disasters etc.

as picture o manila shows decreasing trees in the cities.

disasters have increased in no. in lot of years because of the deforestation of the Philippine rain forests
Reply:seen one megacity you seen them all, in the usa they had problems of smog too, but emissions controls and other controls eliminated most of it.

as for the poor people that is a shame, they are forced together in dirty conditions with dirty water it is a wonder any of them survive enough to have babies (after all I saw alot of toddlers and young children.

any work they get they are paid pennies. this is what corporate exploitation is all about and why it is exploitation is a bad word now.

this makes me think of the smart growth cities they are pushing here in teh name of saving the enviroment. what they don't tell you is that you wont be able to afford the housing food or medicines there because by forcing people to have to live within green lined zones makes demand for the land allowed to build on go up as there is less competition with land else where to build. also because everyone is crammed together they won't be able to drive as the congestion will be to bad and they will outlaw driving pretty much. talk about a fancy walled prison city where you pay for your own slavery and captivity.

some pictures there were pretty of natural world. too bad about disasters, they seem to hit no matter where you live, time and unforeseen occurence befall us all.

those who can't afford the higher prices will be living in shacks like those in the pictures or will be in slave labor camps to pay for their own upkeep behind a fence where they can't leave ever. and they will be fed the cheapest food possible to keep expenses low and profits high.'

RRRRRR
Reply:You certainly managed to get a good cross section of photos.

I knew smog was bad over there but never that bad

So thank you for that selection
Reply:you have way too much time on your hands
Reply:Ok, so I'm livin here in the Philippines right now, it all looks familiar, cities are over crowded, poverty is seen every day, a very common sight, the streets are polluted, and the line between rich and poor is greatly seen, I ahve been able to write a seven page report on it 4 days ago, talking about the political problems, and how I would take steps to rid the philippines of these impurities, but sadly enough the people brought it upon them selves, job discrimination is everywhere, and age discrimination is the largest role of unemployment over here.

But, unlike in the US, there aren't any homeless people here, they make their own houses from lots, but they are frequently expelled out of the lot, because its private property, but most likely, they dont expel out of the lot until they ahve something to build, so Filipinos aren't as nasty as these pictures show it, sure we do have crowded places, and large amount of poverty, along with major waste problems, but the natural scenery stays that way, for another 10 years or so, because I'd bet in 10 years, We'd be able to manage our growth, as the first poster said, we grow everyday, and take steps every single day, we are a country seperated by islands, united by religion, (majority) the sad thing to say, my father said it was a whole lot cleaner 15 years ago, blank lots were plentiful, trees everywhere, and barely any cars/ buildings, but look at today, the supply and demand have forced this upon the Philippines, but Filipinos can manage themselves, at least I hope so, and I hope we can see less poverty stricken kin in the future, along with cleaner streets, and a better enviornment
Reply:No special reaction. They are nice pictures of a 3rd world country. Some of them make you glad to live in America. I don't know about today, but when I was growing up in the 1960s our school teachers were ALWAYS telling us how lucky we were to be growing up in America and how much better off we were than most of the other people in the world and how we should be grateful for that.
Reply:The first thoughts that came to my mind when looking at these pictures were those of the North American settlers that we've all learned about in grade school Social Studies.

You see a potentially beautiful land mass which is quickly becoming over-populated. It happens everywhere. Humanity has a natural desire to become bigger and hopefully better, however sometimes bigger is not necessarily better.

Yes, you see that the poverty is clearly evident in the Phillipines, but some of those pictures could easily be mistaken for other places in Europe as well.

Here in the U.S. we have many levels of poverty. What was frequently called the middle-class is almost non-existent now; I know this because I live within this class, but that is another story.

Your pictures are beautiful. and they speak very clearly. It is time that the Phillipines learn to take better care of Mother Earth, unlike the U.S. has done. She can be neglected only so much, until she decides that it is time for a wake-up call.

Who are the REAL feminists - the so-called "Fake" Feminists or the "True" Feminists?

Rebel F and Gnu Sense and many others have effectively drawn a line between "true" feminism (generally those who believe that feminism is or should be about genuine equality between the sexes) and "fake" feminism (which is a cult which encourages misandry - i.e. man-hate - and which preaches female supremacy).

So how do the feminista - the top feminist leaders, the people who control NOW and the women's studies movement - figure in this. And, if you are a woman, how would you best describe yourself -

(a) a true feminist

(b) so-called 'fake' feminist

(c) non-feminist

Who are the REAL feminists - the so-called "Fake" Feminists or the "True" Feminists?
I am a woman.

That is the only label I accept.
Reply:Feminism is minor League.Classism.

Humanism is the Majors.Beyond,no Sports.
Reply:Feminism and people's beliefs and practices regarding feminism is subject to constant change with time. Hence what is deemed as true feminism today might or might not become fake feminism tomorrow and also might or might not become non-feminism day-after-tomorrow.

Regarding people and women in particular, a person might be a true feminist at this moment and a fake feminist any moment after they have changed to a fake feminist or even a non feminist if they change to that as the time goes by.

The key factor is time. But time alone might not bring change. Hence I think time and change will cause people to randomely become a true feminist, another so-called 'fake' feminist or a non-feminist at any moment across the world.
Reply:Since my name was invoked here, I'd better speak up.

I was accepting this "true feminist" talk for the sake of argument and I applaud Rebel F's complete consistency in her use of the distinction.

For myself, I consider "feminism" and "Civil Rights movement" to both be what Wittgenstein called "family resemblance" concepts, grouping phenomena with overlapping and criss-crossing similarities.

But if someone stipulates that they are using "feminist" as Rebel F does, I can accept that in my discussions with that individual.
Reply:supporter of moderate feminism
Reply:a true Feminist is a woman who just wants to be treated equal, no better,no worse, so yes i am and i date a man who treats me as his equal instead of an inferior and i like that. I like that we take care of each other, go Dutch on dates, etc. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Reply:this is silly- any attempt to categorize women into true or fake feminists is a waste of time, and completely contradictory to the cause. there are some women out there who hate all men, but that isn't what feminism is at all. it's about exposing and challenging the patriarchal system, which does privilege men but isn't men themselves. i am a feminist. drawing a line between right and wrong feminism is drawing a line between women, separating and isolating us from working together. so cut it out.
Reply:The true feminist is simply defined, but relatively rare. Most feminists are close to being a true feminist (and almost all will eventually become a true feminist), but dabble in at least a few double standards, denial, and erroneous justification. They could get a lot more sympathy if they just admitted this, but most won't. Examples of subjects that can be a litmus test for true feminism are:

-The power of female beauty

-Who pays for the first few dates and why

-Females who disproportionately (compared to men) communicate in a disingenuous manner

-Boy's night out

-Comparing a high-stress 45 hour a week job to 60 hours a week as a homemaker

-How young women respond lamentably to male kindness %26amp; get turned on by bad boys.
Reply:ok if you go asking us what we are then we are gonna get all defensive and attack...lol
Reply:I'm a true feminist, because I believe in equalism, as the ideology first was based on. I don't feel compelled to pontificate on the wrongheadedness of rigid gender roles every time I see a little girl playing with her dolls. I'm confident that today's Western women mostly understand that motherhood isn't incompatible with professional achievement. I don't feel any conflict between my femininity and my power. I embrace my womanhood, my femininity, my ability to give birth, to nurture; equality doesn't mean looking or acting manly. I know that today's girls grow up with a pop culture infused with girl power---from Powerpuff Girls to Jessica Lynch. Girls can play superheroes wearing sparkly pink capes as they save the world.

While all of this progress is enormous, I also know that women still earn less than men for performing the same work, women continue to live in fear of sexual assault, and a woman's body is still judged as public property. There is still work ahead to be done to achieve full equality. I also know we need to shift our focus to internationally reaching out to women who are living under barbaric conditions; where honor killings, rape, lack of education, child prostitution and hunger are parts of the every-day life. All women deserve the same equality that we are enjoying. Feminism to me is a humanitarian act, that can't be limited to my own backyard. I don't see the significance of focusing on the political correctness of "mankind" vs "humankind" at home, while neglecting women getting killed and tortured elsewhere.

Btw: Celtish your avatar looks like a school teacher drawing on the board, you're making me nervous to submit my work lol

EDIT: K. I just never had a thing for teachers in the power position, I would get anxiety attacks submitting the work...good to know it's something else. Btw. Let's go go the other question Gnu put up, I'm kinda buzzed and trying to figure out the logic, but kinda lost without further clarification.

EDIT: Nope, I never get those. Working out and cleaning time. Have a good Sat ya'll.
Reply:*standing up* ... I'm the real slim shady!
Reply:I would describe myself as a true feminist. The true spirit of feminism is not about male-bashing...I love several men...family members, my best friend, etc.

Feminism is more about balance. I don't want a world that is based on female supremacy...that would completely miss the point. For example, the problem of domestic violence...stating that men are the only ones that are abusive is only telling half the story. Women can be abusers as well. To not take that into account is to not really look at a problem from all sides.

What can be really great about feminism is that it's about choice also...that we have them. If you want to be a stay-at-home mom you can do that and you shouldn't feel guilty about it. If you're more into a career...that's fine also. Women have to stop chastizing women for the choices they make...whether they are feminists or not.

This is my idea of feminism. It may not be popular but I don't care. I don't have to agree with every little thing issue or idea that's out there. And I refuse to validate any standpoint that would have me do otherwise.

Being a feminist is just one aspect of my life. Being a Christian is just as important to my life. I don't believe in abortion...and I get a lot of flack for it. I vote for both Democrats and Republicans.

Bottom line: Feminism informs part of my life but not all of it. If that makes me not a true feminist in the eyes of some people...oh well. I have a mind of my own!
Reply:I'm definitely (a), being one of the line-drawers.
Reply:(C) I figure it like this. A true feminist is the one who wants equality, once she obtains her goal she's more than willing to let bygones be bygones.

A so-called fake feminists is after the same goal, when she obtains her goal she's the one who's going to hold a grudge no matter what.

What's the err msg? What you pasted was only the first part of the compile output. That is normal. What isn't is if the compilation stops and gives you an err msg. If you got no err msg then simple execute the app. Unfortunately few tarball installations include adding the program to the GUI. So you have to manually add it to your menus. Not difficult to do. Most likely target dir is /usr/bin or /usr/local/[appname]

It is the very last lines that are signficant. You'll often get pages and pages of output during a compilation. The more complex the program the more complex the output usually. For most people this is nothing more than reassurance the compilation is still running. If you have a programming background it can tell you alot, but reading the source will tell you all of it so even programmers normally do not pay much attention to it unless something goes wrong.

Likely problems are dependancies. If there are missing libs for example. If that is the case do a Google on the missing libs to find out what package they are from. Download the appropriate tarball and or rpms. Another easier way is make sure first this app doesn't exist in a yum repository or rpm form. I compile MySQL, Apache, PHP and a few other apps from tarballs because I don't like the configuration in rpms and want far more customization with these apps. Sometimes compiled apps from tarballs are far more efficient as well. Depends on how the rpm was created and how specific it is to your distro,. Everything else if I can I do in rpm format.

If the err msg is not a failed dependancy it might be a missing environment variable. That is again fairly easy to fix. It is usually documented in the readme file that is found in the src dir.

If all of that fails I typically delete the whole package and try something else that does the same thing. Most developers respond imediately to compile problems and there might already be a fix for your problem waiting on the website you downloaded the app from.

Again without the actual err msg hard to say what went wrong if anything.

What can you say about the Philippines???
Well, I'm from Philippines... Although we are under an economic crisis as of the moment, it doesn't mean that our country is not pleasant at all. There are many beautiful places and hospitable people in our country. Whoever posted these things in their site knows nothing about Philippines. If what you see in here is everything that you can see in our country, why are there many foreigners who are still visiting our country? And why is it that there are many foreigners migrating into our country and spends their entire life in this place?
Reply:I'm from the US... at the hotel I work at probably 40%-50% of my coworkers are Filipino/Filipina, and when I was growing up, I was around a lot of Pinays... as a whole, Filipinos are one of the friendliest and nicest groups of people I've met! Great looking women, too. I'd absolutely love to visit someday soon.

Where is a good tutorial website to learn programming/software engineering if you've had intro classes?

I am trying to update my programming/software engineering skills to better suit the current environment. I have had two introductory classes, which were mainly focused on Java and C. I know the basics of programming in these languages, and I know what data structures are (stacks, queues, trees, etc.). However, I am having trouble with setting up the GNU development tools such as make and gdb, as well as with the concept of a makefile, since we were never taught about this. I'm also trying to understand this software engineering/lifecycle stuff, and how it can fit into the design of software.

Would there be a tutorial website that would help with these concepts along with the more advanced concepts in software development? Thanks!

Pro-Gun control, is this what you are really trying to say?

Here are a few quotes from my last question in regards to how liberal gun cnotrol policies result in more violent crimes, lets take a look:

#1 "If there were an anti gun policy in place this foreign student would not have gone to a gun shop and purchased a gun BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE NO GUN STORE.

Let me make it simple NO GUNS = NO SHOOTING SPREE"

#2 "You're telling people to protect themselves FROM guns WITH guns.

Gun control laws seek to REMOVE guns from the entire picture."

--------------------------------------...

Let me say this clearly and anyone who does not see where I am coming from please ask and I will clarify.

Do you truly believe that banning guns from being sold legally will in some way NOT allow criminals to obtain guns? Look at Washington D.C., some of the strictest gun control laws and yet the highest crime rates.

Getting a gnu on the black market is easy. These guns do not come from gun stores of gun shows, they come from other countries.

Pro-Gun control, is this what you are really trying to say?
Not sure if another answerer stated this, but has the ban on guns or gun control helped in ANY other country who has instituted it? Canada? No, actually the violent crime rates rose, and same with Austrailia. Criminals are not law abiding! All a law is going to do is disarm LAW ABIDERS! If you think disarming law-abiding citizens (which should be the ONLY way you're allowed to buy a gun: may I stress CITIZEN) then I'm bad and you should spank me...no really...spank me!!
Reply:Bull ****. The US has the highest crime rate of all of the G9 countries and the most relaxed gun laws.

Canada hasn't had an increase in violence. I know I live here.

Gun control is not a magical wand which removes crime, you need to work on your social culture too. Report It

Reply:but remember if a robber breaks into your house and beats you up and doesn't have a gun and you protect yourself with a gun and shoot the person...YOUR the one that will get locked up! Report It

Reply:I love how David M just trhows numbers out there 30,000 last year like it was war in the US. Well David here are some accurate numbers in context.

Older people's gun deaths are most likely to be suicides. Suicides typically make up 56.5% of all gun deaths according to the Bureau Of Justice Statistics. In fact, drugs and suicides account for more than 2 out of every 3 gun deaths in the USA.

The Africa News.Net

Tuesday 13th February, 2007 (Samantha Power)

In the course of a hundred days in 1994 the Hutu government of Rwanda and its extremist allies very nearly succeeded in exterminating the country's Tutsi minority.

Using firearms, machetes, and a variety of garden implements, Hutu militiamen, soldiers, and ordinary citizens murdered some 800,000 Tutsi and politically moderate Hutu. It was the fastest, most efficient killing spree of the twentieth century.

More than half were killed with Machetes.

Gun Control Law Helped Campus Killer

Yet disarmament lobby and establishment media exploit tragedy to disarm more potential victims

Paul Joseph Watson

Prison Planet

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

In January 2002, a student at the Virginia Appalachian School of Law, Peter Odighizuwa, shot three people dead before other students were able to retrieve guns from their cars and put an end to the carnage before there was more bloodshed. Over thirty victims at VA Tech yesterday were denied that right as a result of a campus gun control law that helped the shooter pick off his targets at will.

A bill in the Virginia legislature last year that would have allowed students with concealed weapons permits to carry their guns at schools was killed, with VA Tech spokesman Larry Hincker heralding the move as action that would "help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." How hollow those words sound now in light of eyewitness reports of how victims had to cower under desks as the killer calmly approached, their only means of defense throwing chairs or risking their lives by escaping out of high-rise windows.

"Isn't it interesting that Utah and Oregon are the only two states that allows faculty to carry guns on campus. And isn't it interesting that you haven't read about any school or university shootings in Utah or Oregon? Why not? Because criminals don't like having their victims shoot back at them," Gun Owners of America's Larry Pratt said yesterday. "That's why the American people want an end to this ineffective gun ban."

85% of Americans support the right of a principle or a teacher to have instant access to a safely stored firearm in order to defend the lives of students and prevent a school massacre, but a drive is already underway to disarm more victims and grease the skids for more horrors similar to what unfolded yesterday.
Reply:No - guns will always be available to those that want them. UK banned handguns and there are probably more now than when they were legal!

Attitude is what counts - Just look at the postings here defending the second amendment to Bear arms when 30,000 Americans are shot dead each year- that's right 30,000!!! 3,000 last month!!

If a knife is available someone will use it. If a baseball bat is available someone will use it. There are more guns in the US than there are people - work it out!!!
Reply:well, i'm a liberal and let me answer that by choosing to ignore all logic, reason and facts... HALLIBURTON! oops, sorry, wrong talking point... Stop Global Warming Now! damn, wrong one again... oh, here it is, we need to take away guns to protect the children! (i mean the ones we don't abort.)
Reply:WE SHOULD GO BACK TO THE WILD WEST !! I SUPPOSE.
Reply:I think are current policies are actually pretty good for American society. Someone determined to kill will kill.
Reply:When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Nuff said.
Reply:Gun Control Advocates are like religous zealouts. There is no negotiating with them; and sadly some times the pro guy lobby is the same way. Its sad that when you bring up factual information like in the book: "More Guns Less Crime" people wack out and can't discuss things rationally. The gun laws of Virginia are not to blame - the young man from Korea is to blame.
Reply:You shout: LESS PEOPLE WOULD ROB A LIQUER STORE IF THEY KNEW THE SECOND THEY PULLED OUT A GUN THEY WOULD BE SHOT. THEY DO IT BECAUSE IT POSES NO RISK TO THEM.

Oh really? Most liquor store owners I know (and I do know a few...long story) have a gun. And I think robbers know that. It doesn't stop them.

So you're saying because guns are available, we should just forget about regulating them at all? With that logic, we should legalize all drugs, allow people to buy bomb-making equipment at the local K-Mart, and allow kiddie porn websites to flourish (they'll always be around, so why try to regulate them?).

Washington D.C. gun-related crime has actually dropped. It has high crime statistics, yes, however with auto theft and burglary accounting for most of it.

Mentally disturbed man with a gun--Bang bang, people die.

Mentally disturbed man without a gun--silence
Reply:Here is another one for your list:

What if the student couldn't get a gun but instead, he got into a car and drove the car into a large crowd to students ?

Why not ban cars ?

There are all sorts of deaths that have been caused by crazed drivers, drunk drivers etc.

There have been more deaths caused from cars than with guns.

Why not ban automobiles ?

Everybody could get a job near home and walk to work.

No more air pollution which also causes death.

Did I get my message across ?
Reply:Firearms do not kill people. People kill people. End of transmission
Reply:My dad's been saying this for years. "If a kid wants to sneak a gun into school, they'll find a way."

Did you know in Japan, they think we all carry guns and people are shot all the time? I mean, they are, but it's not that common.

I agree with the whole thing about guns don't kill people, people kill people. I mean, he could've gone around stabbing people with a sharpened Bic pen if he'd wanted to kill.
Reply:I agree! I'm especially vehement on this issue because it takes protection away from civilans and gives criminals a HUGE advantage.

Marijuana may be illegal, but that doesn't stop drug dealers/addicts.

Prostitution may be illegal, but that doesn't stop pimps or hookers.

Likewise, gun control isn't going to stop a criminal from buying a gun on the black market.

(I'm not saying that we should legalize drugs or prostitution. The point I'm trying to make is that criminals do not operate by the law. If they did, they wouldn't be criminals!)

HOWEVER, I do think you should be required to get a permit, license, or some other registration in order to purchase a firearm. And I would strongly encourage gun safety classes. (maybe make it a requirement for getting the permit?) If you don't know how to handle a firearm, you are much more likely to hurt yourself than a criminal.

*edit* About the VA Tech incident... Cho was seriously messed up. A gun was just a TOOL to do what he wanted to do. Even if he didn't have access to a gun, he could just as well have rigged a homemade bomb with ingredients purchased from the local stores, and detonated it inside the school with far more devastating results.

Now, if the staff and the students had had guns, and they fired at Cho before he had a chance to hurt more people, I believe the casuality rate would have been MUCH lower. Simply put, the best defense against a gun... is another gun!
Reply:Do you blame those who have for those stealing? If no one had bread no one would steal it.. Maybe we should ban food?

If no one owned automobiles, there would be no need for gasoline. This would reduce car thefts to zero.

If we banned guns, the knife fights would more than triple. Maybe we should ban rocks from the planet.

Most of us do not need guns... and do not need them. I do not hunt. I have no need for a gun.

When I find I need to protect my family and home, I want to have the ability to obtain the necessary weapons to do so.

THE REASON THE CONSTITUTION CONTAINS THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS is to ensure we have the ability to protect ourselves from both foreign and domestic tyrants.

I am sure if your loved ones were to be attacked and the government took the tools to protect them, you would be screaming you cannot protect yourself.

One last thought....Knee jerk reactions assist no one. It was a tragedy what happened at the VA campus it would be wrong to jump to conclusions and make it easier for foreign tyrants to take over this great experiment.
Reply:Have Gun, Will Travel (True event, to this day): A man lives in Kennesaw, Georgia, and everywhere he goes, he keeps a .357 revolver in a holster, upon his side, in plain view. He claims to have never been in a place where a crime involving weapons has ever occurred, while he was present.

Reason being? Primary Deterrent: The criminal saw the man with a portable cannon on his hip, and thought twice about committing a crime. A weapon is used by most criminals as a threat. If they see someone who blatantly and openly carries a weapon, they, more times than not, will not chance that they will be killed by the other person, while trying to get what they want. They will move on. THAT is a fact quoted by PD's, nationwide.

In regards to VT, Cho could just as easily used a crossbow with a speed-loader clip, and there are exceptionally few laws to cover that, due to it being an "arcane weapon". If guns are outlawed, people will move to the next viable option, if not just outright becoming a criminal and buying an illegal firearm.
Reply:Gun Contol has not worked in any democratic country that has tried it.

Bill Clinton loved the killings at Columbine.

It gave him an excuse to pass gun control laws.

He knew that they would make no difference.

It's just playing politics.
Reply:People are reactive. Some reactive people are just stupid.

For example, this tragic thing happens, people look for causes, and then come to the conclusion that the guns were why those people died. WHY are we not talking about mental health and prevention services?

Someone mentally ill enough to go out and purchase guns and then kill 32 people and then himself will not be stopped from carrying out his massacre because of any gun control laws. It's really easy to figure out how to make homemade bombs, and that is what people like Cho would resort to if they couldn't find firearms.

From CNN.com:

"Virginia Tech shooter Cho Sueng-Hui was admitted to a hospital for treatment of mental illness in 2005 because he was "an imminent danger to himself," according to court documents."
Reply:I agree with you. Anti-gun laws are for idiots. When we allow the government to be the only entity to have guns, then people, you have given up ALLof your freedoms !!!!!!! Warrantless raids, illegal search and seizures, will become the norm. When the government says jump, you will jump, or you will go to a prison camp !!!! It is not fantasy, it will be real, soon!!!!!!

Why didn't the VT victims, fight back? If I was there, that psycho would have been eating a chair with his pie face!!!!!

GCC for mac?

I want to install a C and C++ compiler for mac. Xcode takes up too much space so I don't want to install that. I've tried the GNU page but I didn't understand a thing. Can someone lead me to the right link to download the compiler pls? Thanks.

GCC for mac?
Compiling open source projects typically requires a C compiler and gcc is typically the compiler of choice. Mac OS X doesn't install the gcc compiler by default but it is freely available in the xcode suite of development tools.

To install the gcc compiler, download the xcode package from http://connect.apple.com/. You'll need to register for an Apple Developer Connection account. Once you've registered, login and click Download Software and then Developer Tools. Find the Download link next to Xcode Tools (version) - CD Image and click it!

Find the downloaded package, doubleclick it and follow the installation instructions to install gcc and a host of other development applications. gcc will be located at /usr/bin/gcc.

wdw
Reply:I hope you know that MAC has a built-in c compiler.
Reply:XCode is also provided on the OS X installation CDs that came with your Mac.

Kamal Karna Roy (a/k/a Kamal K.K. Roy, a/k/a Rev. Dr. Joseph Geronimo, Jr.) is a prolific pro se litigant who, since at least the early 1990s, has filed numerous lawsuits throughout the United States and its territories under the names Roy and Joseph Geronimo, Jr., as well as under the names of entities that he is affiliated with, including International Siva Consciousness %26amp; World Religions, Reforms International, Handicap Interests International, and Jungle Democracy.[1] Roy's lawsuits are often brought against multiple defendants, and feature long, unconventional complaints. Roy has filed lawsuits against God, U.S. Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, fast food restaurants, foreign leaders.[2], and Wikipedia [3] [4].

Roy's lawsuits have addressed, among many other things, actions taken by President George W. Bush, overcharging by telecommunication companies, the appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court, and "failure of democratic societies and God's role therein."[5] In 2006 Judge Michael W. McConnell of The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit described a typical Roy complaint:

Roy, a/k/a Joseph Geronimo, Jr. filed a 115-page complaint, a 144-page amended complaint, and a 40-page second amended complaint against over sixty defendants, including among many others President Bush, God as U.S.-based divine benefactor, several government agencies, The New York Times, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. In addition to pages of rambling discourse, the complaint contains numerous illegible handwritten remarks.[6]

The Tenth Circuit went on to affirm the district court's dismissal of the complaint holding that no discernible claim was apparent from the complaint. Judge McConnell also humorously noted that the court "strongly suspect[ed] at least one defendant was not properly served."[7]

Most, if not all, of Roy's complaints have been dismissed. A 2006 United States District Court for the District of Delaware opinion, Jungle Democracy v. U.S., describes Roy as "no stranger to litigation" and provides a partial list of Roy lawsuits that have been dismissed since 1991.[8]

Despite Roy's lack of success in the courts, his lawsuits have been discussed in law school classrooms and in law related blogs.[9] [10]

In April 2007 Roy filed a civil rights action against, among others, CBS Broadcasting Inc., MSNBC, the United States Government, and controversial radio shock jock Don Imus.[11]

In October, 2007, Roy filed a suit in the US District Court, Middle District of Florida, against "Wikipedia Encyclopedia, USA, All News Media, All State Board of Elections, Federal Election Commission". See Dkt. 3:07-cv-00994-VMC-HTS.

obama shall definitely prove another presidential hopeful of democrats like rudy giuliani of republicans.Obama's abusive deal in purchase of his home purchase reveals a way of wise people in USA to cut short cut deal.But such short circuit for personal gain is very mischievous when it came to natiional interests and it shall definitely arouse loss of faiths in leadership andpeole turn divisive.It is " we the people" to be decisive to stop his hope with additional scrutiny to lead to denial of patriotic job of a u s Presedent 2008. USA is d9vided on issues. we the people can not burden odd issues to add to confusion.Pl elect the clean person as leader and they are in groups of presoidential hpefuls. we the people may have to cross party_line to elect a dependable leader who may comman pulic faith: jerry alston , with consent of a us presiodential, republian hopeful, the rev dr Kamal karna k roy : see the following;

Who is in the top 100 people in the world?

The page "List of billionaires (2007)" has been added to your watchlist, which will list edits to this page and its associated talk page. The page title will also appear in bold type in the list of recent changes.

List of billionaires (2007)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

This list of billionaires is based on an annual ranking of the world's wealthiest people compiled and published by Forbes magazine on 8 March, 2007.[1] There are altogether 946 billionaires on this list, with 178 newcomers and 17 returning after some period of absence. The total net worth is an estimate measured in United States dollars, based on the closing stock prices and exchange rates on 9 February 2007.

On 11 April, 2007, Forbes reported that telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim Helú had risen to become the world's second richest man.[2] Later, the Wall Street Journal on 4 August, 2007 and Fortune Magazine on 6 August, 2007 reported that Carlos Slim Helú had topped Bill Gates' position as the wealthiest person in the world.[3][4][5] Subsequently, on CNBC, Warren Buffett is referred to as the world's third richest man on the December 24 special on him. However, proper accounting methodology requires that all people on the list be ranked on the same date. This list reflects the ranking of the world's billionaires on 9 February, 2007, prior to Carlos Slim Helú becoming the world's richest man.

Due to exchange rates and stock valuations the real ranking is changing every day. The combined net worth of the list is US$3.5 trillion, a US$900 billion increase from 2006.[6]

^ a b c On 11 April, 2007, Forbes Magazine reported that Carlos Slim Helú had surpassed Warren Buffett to become the world's second richest person.[1] Later, in early August, 2007, the Wall Street Journal and Fortune Magazine reported that Carlos Slim Helú had surpassed Aaru to become the world's richest person.[2][3] However, proper accounting methodology requires that all people on the list be ranked on the same date. This list reflects the ranking of the world's billionaires on 9 February, 2007, prior to Carlos Slim Helú becoming the world's richest man.
